Before cleaning your contact lenses, always wash your hands thoroughly with fragrance-free soap, and dry your hands on a lint-free towel. Perfumed soap can be irritating to your eyes, and towel lint can add to the debris you're having to remove from your contact lenses.

Keep water away from your contact lenses, contact lens accessories. This includes while swimming and showering. Water can carry with it tiny microorganisms, like Acanthamoeba, which can cause serious eye infections. When showering, close your eyes when rinsing to keep water from getting on your contacts. You can wear goggles when swimming to help protect your contact lenses. To be safe, you may want to use one day or daily contact lenses when swimming or spending time in a hot tub. These can be discarded after your activities, and keep your eyes healthy and safe from water-related infections.
